Transparency of Jellies.

If you ever need to meditate on something, I highly suggest a visit to see the jellyfish exhibit at the Monterey Aquarium.  If only there wasn't a hundred thousand people there trying to see the exhibit as well.  The nerve!  The jellyfish are really beautiful, and are soothing to watch.  They were the inspiration for my next colored pencil collage, titled "Transparency of Jellies."deep-blue-jelly-2.jpgultraviolet-jellies.jpgdeep-blue-jellie3.jpg

You can see what I mean.  The jellyfish are lyrical and so elegant.  I took the three images above and combined them into the collage below.

Of course I can never make it easy on myself.  Look at this collage, am I crazy???  As always I try to make things as hard as possible.  You tell me,  personally I think it was worth it.

This is the first layer of color over the gray "underpainting."  I  chose soft colors to bring across the calming feel that I experienced when watching the jellyfish.

This is the final image for Transparency of Jellies.  Love it.

This was the piece that was selected by the jurors for the Emeryville Art Show,  and I think it was one of two pieces that represented me the best out of this series.

watercolor-jellies-9-2007-2.jpg I recycled the jellyfish collage again to do a piece for a friend who really admired the original one which sold.  I did this one in watercolors in September of 2007, and it is much more simplified than the colored pencil version. Though there are areas which you probably cannot see in this thumbnail photo which have captured the light "airiness" of watercolor pretty well.  Personally I like the colored pencil version better.
