"Art of Choice"

The first time I tried to use art to make a difference was back in New York.  I collaborated again with Spencer on this project.   It was during a time of heightened HIV/AIDS awareness in the city.  In order to help to promote tolerance and smart choices for all different types of couples we started a project called "Art of Choice."   We worked with several different couples, straight and gay, giving them the materials to do the project.  The materials were a large white sheet of cloth & non-toxic paints.  The goal was to use the body as the vehicle for making art.  It is not as "ooh-la-la" as one would think, because the paint is COLD and it takes careful movement and placement to get a good print.  The examples below are the results from the couples that were involved in the project.  You tell me which of the three couples below is gay or straight.  The interesting result is that you can't tell as in this format they all look the same.

In addition to the art work that was generated, we also spent a lot of time interviewing AIDS patients in the last stages of their disease at a hospice located in downtown NY.  We wanted to have them tell their stories in their own voices and have them be heard.
